Ways to Prevent Childhood Obesity

Obesity in children is a serious condition, but it is preventable. However, the CDC shares that obesity prevalence among children is still high. In 2017-20201, for children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, the rate of obesity was 19.7% and affected about 14.7 million children and adolescents.

Obesity can result in type 2 diabetes, heart problems, stroke, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Mental health consequences of obesity also lead to bullying, low self-esteem, and depression.

This National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, our pharmacy in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, would like to share some wellness tips that parents and kids can follow to prevent obesity in childhood.

Having too little activity yet too many calories from food and drinks contributes to childhood obesity. Genetic and hormonal factors play a role as well. If you, as a parent, are aware of this risk factor, make it a point to encourage healthy eating and activities at home.
Let your children engage with their peers instead of their gadgets. Allow your child to play sports, learn a musical instrument, or have an adventure with them outdoors.

Regular check-ups with their doctors are strongly advised. Frequent visits to the doctor’s clinic can help identify early signs of obesity through blood pressure checks, for example.

Be a good example to your kids. Healthy habits you and your kids can practice are keeping healthy snacks at home, choosing non-food rewards, and getting lots of sleep.
